The Vice-Chancellor Quaid-e-Azam University survived the assassination attempt during the flag hoisting ceremony.

What are you doing? He told me to step back or I will shoot. As soon as he spoke of the bullet, I immediately jumped on him and firmly held his hand and turned towards the sky and then the sound of fire rang in my ears. I held his hand more firmly, after which my other companions grabbed him from behind.

This story was told by Quaid-e-Azam University Professor Dr. Ishtiaq Ali to BBC Urdu, who foiled an assassination attempt on the vice-chancellor of the university participating in the flag hoisting ceremony in Islamabad, the federal capital of Pakistan, on the morning of Pakistan's Independence Day.

According to university registrar Raja Qaiser, the incident took place after the flag hoisting ceremony at the Central Library, when a man pulled a pistol on the vice-chancellor and fired three shots.

Vice-Chancellor Dr. Muhammad Ali Shah confirmed the attack on him to the BBC and said that he survived today because of his colleague's presence of mind.

According to him, 'the accused has been working on contract in the university since 2016, but he has never had direct contact with me.'

The police have arrested the accused and registered a case of this incident. In his initial statement, the accused has told the police that he has been working for seven or eight years on a very low salary, but he is not being given permanent employment.

According to Dr. Ishtiaq Ali, "As soon as the accused placed the pistol on the vice-chancellor's couch, I was standing at a distance of about one meter with two other colleagues." I immediately shouted and said, "What are you doing? Just as soon as the words of bullet came out of his tongue, then without thinking, I jumped on him and held his hand."

He said that he did all this within two or three seconds and the main reason for his success was that the Vice-Chancellor did not panic at all and stood with great composure, due to which the accused could not succeed in his intention.

According to Dr. Ishtiaq, when he was holding the accused's hand, he was trying to somehow free his hand and fire at the vice chancellor.

According to him, in this attempt, the accused fired three shots, but fortunately, all the people present there, including the Vice-Chancellor, were miraculously safe.

University registrar Raja Qaiser, who was also present at the event, told the BBC that the suspect was not an employee of the university but an intern in a department.

According to Dr. Sohail Yusuf, "Vice Chancellor Dr. Muhammad Ali Shah has been serving here for four years and most employees were promoted during his tenure."

According to him, "a few months ago, there was a report from the intelligence that the vice chancellor may be attacked."

According to him, "In the light of this report, we had taken some necessary measures related to security." He said, "The threat was reduced to a great extent, but what happened on the morning of Independence Day was very unexpected." '

According to Dr. Sohail, this incident happened at 10:08 AM. According to him, it has been found from the CCTV cameras that the accused was waiting for the arrival of the vice chancellor's car for ten minutes.

However, unexpectedly, the Vice Chancellor got busy chatting with colleagues.

According to him, the accused participated in this event wearing a waistcoat and also took pictures. According to him, after the ceremony, 'as we were moving forward, the accused already stood near the door of the library.'

According to Dr. Sohail Yusuf, he along with Dr. Ishtiaq and a security guard were some distance ahead of the Vice-Chancellor when the accused suddenly pulled out a pistol on Dr. Muhammad Ali Shah's lap and said, "I have been here for so long, I have no The word is not heard.'

According to him, the Vice-Chancellor remained calm and Dr. Ishtiaq Ali spoke to the accused and then held his arm. According to him, 'when the fire was fired, after that I went ahead and arrested the accused, but two more fires were fired during this period as well.'

According to Dr. Sohail, an American-made pistol has also been seized from the accused and handed over to the police. "Now it is the job of the police to find out how the accused got the pistol on such a low salary and who else is involved in this plan."

A university official told the BBC that they had also told the police to investigate whether there was an element of sectarianism in the plan.

Fayyaz Akbar, the investigating officer of this case, told the BBC that "the accused is a patient of depression and he has been a contract employee of the university for the past seven to eight years and was working on a monthly salary of 10,000."

According to him, the accused told the police that allegedly 'Antamia University was not giving him a permanent job.'

However, according to him, the investigation is still going on and the accused will be produced before a local court in Islamabad on Monday morning.

It is important to mention here that Dr. Ishtiaq belongs to Gujarkhan.
